The Red Nature of Mammalga
The Red Nature of Mammalga
GREEN taking place at University of Copenhagen
and The National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen 2018
The Red Nature of Mammalga is a performative installation fusing red algal and human bodies. It is a further development of and visual counterpart to Algebar , which since 2015 has been serving luminous green spirulina infused drinks from an immersive algae growing installation. Now, in the aftermath of rethinking nature as green we suggest a luscious red biodesign installation. The concept is situated around the evolutionary biology of red algae ( rhodophyta ) offering a complimentary view to the contemporary era of green design . Whilst articulating both the sensual and visual connection between human and algae we investigate what happens aesthetically when the
chlorophyll green is switched around with the complementary blushing astaxanthin pigment of red algae.
